Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas
Director
Ilyena is a lecturer at the University of Glasgow running the Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI) group. Over the past decade, Dr. Hirskyj-Douglas has led projects for the design and development of novel computer systems that enable animals to control their environment and access the Internet prioritising animal well-being and agency. Her work has opened new possibilities for animals’ connection both with humans and with other animals, and it has enabled unprecedented means of communication. She also co-directs the Interact Animal Lab a partnership across MIT, Northeastern and Glasgow University.
Jiaqi Wang
PhD Student
Jiaqi was awarded a prestigious college scholarship to come study in the school of Computer Science at the University of Glasgow in the ACI lab under supervision of Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas and Prof. Stephen Brewster. She researches ways to enhance the human-lemur relationship in zoo contexts. As a designer, she aim to combine technology with design to improve lemurs’ lives. By merging ACI with HCI, she creates interactive device for lemurs and humans to improve their interactions in zoos in safe, sustainable way. Her goal is to provide lemurs with enrichment and foster harmonious coexistence with humans. She envision a future where ACI research guides sustainable living for humans and animals alike, creating a vibrant and interconnected world.
Weiyung Wang
PhD Student
Weiyun is supervision of Dr. Xianghua (Sharon) Ding and Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas in the School of Computer Science. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University in 2022 with a master’s degree, and before that, she graduated from the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor’s degree. With a background in design and fine arts, her research focuses on displaying health data through tangible interactive devices and promoting engagement with sensitive health information. Her research aims to improve the accessibility and usability of health data, merging aesthetics with functionality to create visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces.
Christopher Skinner
Neurology Residency
Christopher is undertaking a residency at the University of Glasgows College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. He is working on developing treatment for canines who have epilepsy and how to report these to veterinary specialists using mobile applications in home settings. Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas advises alongside Mrs Catherine Stalin and Mr. Rodrigo Gutierrez Quintana
